Sample SMaths Challenge Question for Category Primary/Year 5

Brown has RM66 and Tom has RM30. How much money must Brown give to Tom so that the ratio of Brown’s money to Tom’s money is 7 : 5?

a) 8                        c) 10

b) 7                        d) 6

Answer with solution:

Total amount of money Brown and Tom has

= RM66 + RM30

= RM96

12 units RM96

1 unit RM96 ÷ 12

= RM8

7 units 7 x RM8

= RM56

Brown must give Tom = RM66 - RM56

= RM10

Brown must give Tom RM10 so that the ratio of Brown’s money to Tom’s money is 7 : 5.
